Our first day in Seoul was a day to rest and get our bearings. To that end, we lounged around most of the morning working up the courage to tackle the Seoul subway system to go shopping for some groceries for the rest of the week.

When we finally decided to take the plunge, since we were on our own we played it safe, used our parking garage location trick and took pics of the entrance we came in and the direction we took to find the subway trains.

Even with our photo prep, we got a bit turned around and almost bailed, but a nice gentleman at an info booth gave us a handy little map and pointed us in the right direction. Soon we were on the number 3 orange line to Jongno Station and successfully transferred to the number 1 dark blue line to Seoul Station.

Happy with our initial success, we visited the Lotte Mart and bought a big box Maxim Gold, some fruit and lots of handy single-packet snacks for outings. By then it was dark and we were pretty hungry, so we walked until we found a mom and pop restaurant where we could eat dinner before facing the challenge of getting back where we started.

Fortunately, we made it back on our own and even found our way out, with the help of the pics we took. We were so excited and proud of ourselves we took a pic to commemorate our success, after which we popped into the 7-11 for bottled water, honey chips and other treats and parked ourselves in our Air Bnb to enjoy the evening drinking decaf coffee I’d brought with me to Korea (try finding decaf or diet drinks here…) and eating chocolate cakes and cookies.

It was a good thing we rested up and refueled. The next day would prove to be hoppin’ busy!
